THE MUSEUM SERIES: OBJECT 001

What happens when a museum object becomes a piece of jewellery?

For this piece, I looked to a Maasai warrior mask from the early 21st century, documented in the collection at Missouri State University.

The mask caught my attention because of its sculptural face, exaggerated features and striking silhouette.

I was particularly interested in translating its facial structure into silver, creating a small wearable sculpture that carries the character of the original reference into a completely different medium.

This is part of an ongoing exploration at Elleca: looking at objects preserved in museums and archives, learning about the people and histories behind them, and finding new ways to interpret their forms through jewellery.

Not replicas, but contemporary interpretations inspired by objects with stories to tell.

The Maasai warrior is known as a Moran (plural: Morans, also written Ilmurran). But warriorhood is much more than fighting.

Traditionally, Morans have several important responsibilities:

Protection: They protect cattle, families and communities from threats.

Courage: Strength and bravery are important qualities associated with warriorhood.

Discipline and endurance: Their physical training and jumping dance, adumu, demonstrate focus, stamina and physical ability.

Brotherhood: Warriors belong to age sets, creating strong bonds and shared responsibilities.

Transition into adulthood: Warriorhood is a stage in a person’s life, not a permanent title.

The National Museums of Kenya explains that young men enter warriorhood through initiation, and later progress towards elderhood through ceremonies including Eunoto.

Kinyago Maasai-Inspired Silver Necklace

Inspired by the distinctive imagery of Maasai masks, the Kinyago Necklace translates expressive facial forms into a wearable silver sculpture.

The pendant features a stylised face with sculpted eyes, nose and mouth, capturing the character of the original inspiration through carefully shaped silver details. At 2.8 cm tall, it is a distinctive piece that celebrates the relationship between jewellery, art and cultural expression.

Wear it as a standalone statement or layer it with delicate silver chains.

Care

Sterling silver naturally tarnishes over time. To keep your jewellery shiny, gently polish it with the complimentary polishing cloth included with every piece.

Avoid contact with perfume, lotions, household cleaning products, chlorine and salt water. Remove your jewellery before swimming, showering or exercising.

When not wearing it, store your jewellery in its original box or pouch in a cool, dry place.

For heavier tarnish:
Wrap your jewellery in aluminium foil and place it in a bowl. Add baking soda, then pour hot water into the bowl. Leave for a few minutes, rinse thoroughly with clean water and dry completely.

Do not use this method on pieces with Porous gemstones   examples include turquoise, opal, pearls, amber, coral and emerald or an intentionally oxidised finish.
